Align and Adjust in August

Last August I wound cucumber vines and succored tomatoes. I stocked the freezer with wild blueberries from the high bushes. I trampled the morning dew and walked in every morning sun. That was last August.

Now I wave from my window, she knows I am here. One mislabeled tomato plant sits at my step, cherry, not beefsteak. No vines to untangle, no thought of pickles. Blueberries from the grocery mart suffice.

I still will cherish August and her lack of holidays, not so much her lack of fruit. Friends fill an empty space but not a vold.

Rain softens the soil
Downpours produce a mudslide
Choice changes seasons

Very poignant, Mary! Hopefully, next season brings an abundance of fruit. ❤ But, yes, the weather has been unpredictable like that, especially as you say in these lines:

    "Rain softens the soil
    Downpours produce a mudslide
    Choice changes seasons"

Choice changes the season indeed. I hope it changes for the better eventually. A very beautiful and evocative haibun, I enjoyed reading it.

It is amazing how one year can be so different from another. I loved your detailed description. It made the turn that much more impressive. Well done Mary … Great haibun.

Is this because of COVID, Mary?

    • I am so weary of COVID, I will give it no attention, even though it begs for all. No. Energy, time, help (no one wants to share the burden), too much rain and too many rabbits with their appetites. It all makes poetry, so yes, I find the silver lining. And I am not hungry!

One wonders how seasons can change. I felt the bounty and loss.

Such a sadness seems relayed from last year to this. Hopefully emotions rebound and next year’s garden fluorishes.
