I stood in the center of the arboretum
And longed for trees
Sculptured and tapered
Takes far more labor than love
I stood under a full moon
And longed for attention
Soon she hung so alone
I couldn’t touch her
I stood in the hot sun
And longed for sweetness
Cotton candy leaves me
Sticky and sickly
I rested in the shade of the wonderful wisteria
And longed for respite
But couldn’t sleep
Knowing her seeds are poisonous
I stood at the edge of the pool
And longed for refreshment
My reflection stared back
Mingling my instability with hers
I found a genie lamp and left it lying
My heart now a cavern
My longings carved an open space
For Christ to move inside
