There Will Always be Secrets

When I was a kid I never knew
Why grandpa stayed with us without grandma too
Or what was wrong, why did auntie die
I heard as many whispers as saw tears in their eyes
Did she have a disease and can I get it too
I was with her last week
For an hour or two
Well, just last month I learned of my mother
Putting rum in the fruitcake every year…from my brother
A teetotaler was all the label I saw
From my first memory, no hint or a scrawl
Could make me believe she ever took a drop
A secret well-kept, maybe protection —
Or not
Truth, tell it loud
Or bury it deep
Someone, somewhere will eventually seek
To unearth all the answers none else dare
Assuming the motives to give off some flair
Whatever I tell you, or weave into my plan
I hope I’m long gone
When it all hits the fan prompt is to write a poem about secrets. A little fun.

Keeping secrets from children is tricky and not answering their questions can be cruel – they dwell on things they don’t understand – and you’ve captured this in your poem, Mary. I like the advice: ‘Truth, tell it loud / Or bury it deep’. But the truth will always find its way out.
