Take Nothing For Granted

It’s the end of the day
And I’m settled in safe and warm

While others wait
While others pack
While others leave

Some will never return
Tears like rain drench their dreams
Shear winds sweep through their minds
Before wind and rain come

What will they take?
Pictures, clothes
just what will fit
in the back of the car

Many were already done
Now starting over
And remembering just yesterday
When they were the ones

At the end of the day
settled in safe and warm

Linking up with dVersepoetspub.com where the promptis of my own choosing. With 2 hurricanes back to back I try as best I can to appreciate what I have realizing the brevity of life and how quickly things can change.

About Mary (tqhousecat)

I am married, and a mother of two grown children. I love Jesus and sharing my faith through written words. My poetry is on my blog and you can find some previous stories on Medium and linked-in. My focus is hope in Christ. My desire is that whoever reads this will be blessed, inspired, occasionally amused, kind, and patient to my growth in Christ as He conforms me to His image.

How quickly life can change. “What will they take?”, a profound question of a moment in crisis and a test of character. May you continue to enjoy safety and warmth. Good write.

Much food for thought here. I have bugout bags for my husband and and a box of pics and food, my mother’s ashes waiting to be scattered. Otherwise…we have no pets but they would be packed if we did too.

  6. We take for granted our safe and warm places – and so suddenly, they can be lost. A wonderful poem.

Exactly on target! I’ve done that. This time… same as last year… we’re staying and praying.

Calamities do not discriminate. The logical thing to do is to get out fast to somewhere very safe!

I liked these two lines: “Tears like rain drench their dreams
Shear winds sweep through their minds” and the ending about being safe only a few days ago.

  12. I’ve been watching the hurricane bear down on Florida all day. What to take, what to leave… And starting all over when you should be retired. A perfect write for today.
